Such a lot has happened since last Saturday morning. The earthquake is one of those "we will never be quite the same again" times.
I have spent this time doorknocking to check that people are ok, especially those that are at home alone, talking with business people, putting together an information sheet that I have circulated widely, and trying to help as many people as possible.
Our side of the city got off pretty lightly compared to other areas. The second quake was centred near Lyttelton, but still did not cause the huge damage that the first one did. And we are so fortunate that no lives have been lost.
I am pleased that the engineers and the heritage people are working together to make sure that we don't lose buildings that could be repaired and strengthened. There is a real tension for them needing to put safety at the forefront. I think they are really trying hard to get it right.
I have been just amazed at the strength in our communities to look after each other. Neighbours checking on people around their area. People turning up at the shelters to offer bedding and help. And the students using their enforced week off to shovel sand and mud.
It has been a hard few days. But the response has been awesome. We are lucky to live here. It's not over yet. For some, their water has been off and on and off again. Their power has been off and on and off again. And the aftershocks have been really gruelling. Tensions are high and sleep has been short.
So keep an eye out for yourself, your family and your neighbours. We will get through this earthquake!
