Ruth Dyson moved into her new office on 3rd May and on Sunday the 'official' opening ceremony was held. The office is right opposite the Woolston Post Office and is easy to find, just look for the bright red signs.
Ruth is the Labour MP for the Christchurch Port Hills electorate and a large gathering of local people and supporters were there recently for the Grand Opening. Richard Tankerlsey led the blessing and he was assisted by the Rev Vilma Loader from Lyttelton.
Rev Andrew Smith from the nearby St John's Anglican Church was also in attendance, together with Brendon Burns, Labour MP from the adjacent Christchurch Central electorate.
The official proceedings commenced outside the main entrance with singing and a blessing. Richard and Vilma then proceeded indoors and went through all the rooms using a fern leaf to spread drops of water. This made sure the blessing was felt throughout the office.
After these proceedings, Ruth stepped outside and spoke briefly before cutting the ribbon with the cry of "We are now open!"
The mood was one of happiness and optimism for the future. The friendly crowd then shared an afternoon tea of sandwiches and cakes and chatted about how, although the office has moved only a short distance up the road, it is certainly streets ahead in terms of comfort, space and conviviality!
Feel free to pop in to 642 Ferry Road and view the building. The friendly staff will make you welcome.
