"Following reassurances from the City Council that the cemetery could be visited again, with caution, The Friends of Linwood Cemetery Trust held a Social Gathering on Sunday 7th November 2010 to encourage the community back into this beautiful and valuable heritage greenspace.
A sausage sizzle, expertly cooked by Graham Holloway, started the proceedings. Ruth Dyson, MP for the Port Hills, joined in the fun and went beyond the call of duty by giving out the sauasages and refreshments to order! The opportunity to exchange information about ancestors and the effect of the earthquake over lunch was followed by a walk around the cemetery. A tour of some of the fascinating graves was led by Richard Greenaway whose local knowledge and accuracy of recall is second to none!
Several people were delighted to have the support of the Trustees in locating their ancestor's graves. We gained 2 more subscribing 'Friends' to continue the growth in numbers of the people wanting to support the work of the Trust.
Anyone with ancestors in Linwood Cemetery is encouraged to contact us. The Council is not able to give us information about the living families attached to a grave due to the Privacy Act. If you volunteer that information to us we can keep you informed of matters concerning your ancestor's plot(s) and the cemetery. We look forward to hearing from you!
